#30 Green Mangoes

One of the streetfoods of Tacloban, plain green mangoes eaten raw with salt, hipon (fermented microscopic shrimps) or bagoong (fermented anchovies). You will see stalls like this as you walk downtown.

#29 Another old house

Another 'old' house belonging to the old families in Tacloban. This one is where my favorite secondhand bookshop /coffeeshop (Libro) is located. You can read a good book AND drink coffee at the same time. Old Filipino-Spanish homes in the Philippines used the first floor as the 'grannary' where they stock-piled rice grains. I remember such homes and the smell of mustiness and earth, the coolness and the feeling of being home. Kind of like being in a cellar with windows. There's a trend now, of repainting these old houses with vivid colors. Remember the Pepsi ad?

#28 Road Rules

In any city in the Philippines (except Makati), it's not surprising to see someone breaking the law, vendors selling pirated cds or smuggled goods openly on the sidewalk while policemen watch indifferently, or motorists not following simple road rules. Here you'll see cars parked on a no parking busy crossing.

#27 Singing Numbers (Numbers Theme Day)

What can I say, Asians love dried fish. We have all kinds, sorted by sizes, way of drying, way of cutting and slicing, type of fish, etc.. When you're visiting Asia and staying near residential houses and smell something awful, chances are someone in the neighborhood is frying dried fish.

When you go to a market and buy one of these, it's now sold by kilos. Before, they were sold by hundreds or by piles. How do you count small fishes by hundreds?? In the town of Palo (12 km from Tacloban) where there's a tabo (big market day every Saturday), dried fishes are sometimes sold by kilos (as shown in the photo above), or sometimes still by hundreds. There's a tradition here where counting is sung. Yes, old women count by singing the numbers. Their chantings syncrhonize and it is very fascinating to listen. The practice is slowly disappearing though. I had to ask a teenager to give me a sample because it's hard to find these old women now. The video is below if you're interested to see. #26 Pepsi ad

One of the old Filipino-Chinese homes in Tacloban, this one was a block away from my grade and high school and was where we used to buy our school supplies when we ran out. It had been looking very dilapidated until they painted it with this Pepsi ad, not much now. But imagine living inside a Pepsi ad..

#25 Coke in Cans

One of the landmarks in Tacloban is the Coca-Cola Bottling Plant. As a kid, I was always fascinated by the giant Coke bottles displayed outside the building. Today's kids are fascinated by the giant Coke in cans, which took the place of the old bottled coke. Took this while driving by..

#24 Gumamela

There are 300 species of gumamela found worldwide. It is widely cultivated as ornamental flowers and comes in many colors: red, yellow, orange, white, purple, pink, and other color combinations. It's known as hibiscus, China Rose or Shoeflower in English. Not many know that it can be used as a medicinal herb or as a poultice applied to the skin. Currently there is a trend of using it as an ingredient in herbal teas.

The gumamela is a common flower everywhere in the Philippines, this one was in the backyard taken after the rain.

#23 Lavatoryo (Water Theme Day)

I've been saving this photo for this theme day. This is a river in Tunga (about 40kms away from Tacloban) where the water plant, Tacloban's water source, is located. The women are washing their clothes in the river which they do every Holy Thursday. The 'event' is called lavatoryo (from the word 'lavar' to wash). According to Catholic practice you can't work for 3 days (from Good Friday to Sunday), so the women wash their clothes in the river on Thursday. It's an old practice that they do even in this modern age of washing machines, sort of blessing their clothes in the river too. People have picnics nearby. (Photo by Grace Ragasa, who was there.)

#22 Palo library

This is an old house in Palo Leyte owned by the old dons of Leyte, Don Pedrosa, a founder of the Prudential Bank (now merged with the Bank of the Philippine Islands). He's also the grandfather of that CNN anchorwoman Veronica Pedrosa whose family was exiled during the Marcos time. While I was growing up, the first floor used to be the Public Library, with lots of donated books from the US. The building is designed after the Spanish old homes in the Philippines. If you're wondering why there is a crowd outside, it's because the people are waiting for a parade to pass by.

#21 Sunzibar

Or what we call Sunzi for short, is a Tex-Mex Filipino fusioned resto bar which has been in existence for almost 10 years now. The pork chop and spare ribs are good, served with rice (of course). They serve some Mexicanish tortillas too. I had Marchie (the waitress) pose for the photo with the threat that if she doesn't I'll report her to the owner, Mayanne. She did :-D
