Dried flying lizard cure

I was walking downtown and passed by this street vendor selling this. I glanced at the sign and said in my head, "tamumukaw.. tamumukaw.. tamumukaw". After passing two shops, I did a doubletake and said to myself, "tamumukaw??" I went back and asked the guy if I could take a photo. I also asked him what a tamumukaw was. It turned out, it's a flying lizard that's a cure for asthma and cough. I asked how it's eaten, he said you just nibble on it. But he was laughing so I asked if he would eat one. He said, only if I eat one too. It's true though, kids with asthma get to eat this lizard and it's believed they're cured of asthma forever. The tamumukaw is hard to catch, but it's not an endangered species yet. The catching of this is allowed by the DENR since it's used for medicinal purposes, but vendors need to have a permit to catch and sell the flying lizards.

Philippine legend says that man and woman came from inside a bamboo that was split open by a lightning. They were called Malakas (Strength) and Maganda (Beauty). Notice how they were both created AT THE SAME TIME. I guess that's why we've had 2 women presidents already. Women are matriarchal and influential in our society. And the men are just as macho.

Yesterday, I went to the mall because I heard there was an exhibit of local food products (haha), but it was the last hour of the last day, and the food had almost ran out. The exhibit was called Bahandi. And they were closing up. I went to another exhibit, a photography exhibit of the Camera Club of Leyte and Samar, and that's the photo above. (I didn't know there was such a club here, although one member is a friend of mine, a very serious photographer.)

I didn't like the first prize winner, nor the second, I like the basket photo at the bottom more. It's all subjective of course.. That's why I don't trust art competitions. Do you ever want your art to be "judged" by another? Usually even, by a lesser artist than you are?

65th Leyte Landing Anniversary

65 years ago, Gen. MacArthur landed in Leyte as he promised and drove away the Japanese troops. A battle ensued until the official surrender of Japan on September 2, 1945. Every year the Leyte Landing is commemmorated by officials with many Filipino, Japanese, American and Australian war veterans attending. It's one of the big events in Leyte's cultural activities. It always make me wonder why we love to celebrate wars. We have war festivals and war museums. The peace treaty signed between the US and the Japanese aboard the USS Missouri that ended World War II is not even remembered.

But anyway, this year, the Leyte Landing will be celebrated again at the scorchingly hot McArthur Park in Palo, with the President of the Philippines attending. But it will also be celebrated at the new a/c Robinson's Mall, so I wasn't surprised to see a replica of the McArthur monument at their entrance. It was nicely made too, better sculpture even than the original bronze at the park. When I touched it, I was surprised that it was sculpted from styrofoam. It is amazing, don't you think? I didn't get the name of the artist who did this tho.

Local plant Jatropha, source of biodiesel

One of the projects I worked with last year was establishing a jatropha plantation. Jatropha is a local plant that grows in the tropics (Southeast Asian countries, India, South America, even Florida). Our local plant here (jatropha curcas linn) grows wildly in countrysides. It's usually used for fencing because goats and cows and carabaos avoid it. Recently, it has been considered a goldmine because the seeds, once dried and processed produce biofuel! So aside from its byproducts being turned into soaps, low-grade kerosene oil, fertilizer and firewood, mass production for biofuel can earn the country/company some carbon credit points which can be sold to industrial Kyoto member-countries that produce lots of carbon emission. Another way of solving the climate change.

Below is a picture of a nursery plantation. As you can see, it doesn't need much tending. It grows wildly with grass. Doesn't compete with human food either (like coconut), nor agricultural land.

Balyuan Tower

This place used to have a watchpoint tower made of iron railings and a "tower" at the top. It kept being renovated all the time, until it was finally demolished. The tower was used as a lookout point for Moro pirates. This arena-like area (added in the 80s) is used for concerts, competitions, free outdoor movies, and cheap dates. You can buy streetfood barbecue behind it. This looks out to the bay (and to the tower) and you can see the sunrise and moonrise from here.

It's called Balyuan because this was the place where the bigger Sto. Nino of Basey Parish was exchanged with that of the smaller Sto. Nino statue of Tacloban. 'Balyu' in Waray means 'exchange'. A festival is held here every year to celebrate that exchange. The statue is supposed to be miraculous.

(Of course, balyu could mean 'trade'. Balyuan, a place where you trade.)

My favorite. I grew up in a house like this but of hardwood panels, tipay windows and bigger. The nipa roof, as opposed to G.I. sheets, makes for a cooler interior, especially with the cool polished wooden flooring.

It's old, maybe a renovated 50s or 60s. But its original style is definitely post American period. No one builds a wooden house with hardwood anymore because it's illegal to chop down hardwood for housing and furniture. Unless you have a license and permit, in that case the wood would be very expensive, even for a furniture. New houses are now concrete to withstand the typhoons.

Fire! No Fire!

So I was picking up my mail at my cousin's shop this morning, when I saw this crowd staring up at an old house. I saw a guy holding a pail throw water to the roof of the house (which obviously made the crowd laugh because the water wouldn't reach that high). Then another guy started throwing ice to the roof, it reached that high, but it didn't melt that fast. The crowd laughed again. Another guy carrying a fire extinguisher climbed out a window from the upper rooms but wouldn't step on the G.I. sheet roof because either it was too hot (from the sun) or he was scared of getting electrocuted. The crowd was cheering him on, until finally he was able to aim the fire extinguisher at the sparking and smoking electrical wiring inside the outer ceiling (dunno what it's called). The crowd cheered although you couldn't really tell if there was still smoke coming out of the roofing. There was. Then the firetruck arrived (5 to 10 minutes later), and that's the photo above. The fire was out but they broke through the ceiling to look at the damage, then the electrical company guys arrived to fix the wiring. Fast action. The city is scared of fire here, because of the wooden houses and their proximity to one another. (Sorry, no picture of the three stooges.. I was laughing too hard, or the crowd because I was one of those watching, or the house because the firetruck was covering my view. But it really happened.)

Renovated old Spanish period house

Old houses like this were built from hardwood usually not using nails but in the old style (kind of like ancient Japanese carpentry). So as they age, the house becomes askewed. So the first thing that's done to repair them is to build a better foundation on the lower ground floor. Here's an example of a renovated old Spanish house. The lower floor has been converted to concrete then covered with Mactan tiles (a type of unpolished marble bricks). The upper floor was maintained, and the roof now has modern roofing. In my opinion the attempt to retain the wooden design in the upper floor is to be commended, but after all that work, they could at least have reburnished the wood to give it the old polished look.

Old houses here used to belong to the old rich, then abandoned because either the owners have migrated to the cities or abroad, or the owners are dead. Only the caretakers (usually distant relatives) are looking after the houses, and the upper floor where the antique belongings are kept boarded up. This old, abandoned house has obviously been left by the owners, and someone else living under the house, either rented out or maintained by the caretaker. (Didn't stop to ask.)

Salas (living/receiving room), bedrooms, kitchen, bathrooms of old Spanish houses here are all located in the second floor. First floors were used as rice granaries or as stockroom for farm equipment. When you enter the main door of an old house, you immediately see a staircase that leads to the sala upstairs.

Today is Contrast theme day. But I only have these all-white baby rabbits to shoot. They're my 8-yr old niece's pets which have numbered to 15 rabbits roaming in the backyard in 1 year. Pretty soon, we'll have no choice but to eat them. We cook them here as kaldereta (cooked in tomato sauce with veggies).

Which would go well with these all-white puto (rice cake) made early this morning just for today's theme.

A week ago, I met with a client who was visiting from the States. We were discussing some travel business, and she brought me to this place where she had been invited for lunch with her friends, to see if it had potential for a tourist destination, the real feel kind. Anyway, this place is called the Shed, where fishing boats dock and freshly caught fish are sold everyday. It doesn't smell bad because the fish are still fresh and some even alive. They start smelling when they are frozen or have been lying around for long, which never happens at the Shed. All fish for sale disappear in two hours.

Anyway, I'll be posting here the photos I took there, so be prepared for a lot of Shed photos because they're going to be here until the end of the month. I should be back by then. :D

The temperature today reached as high as 90+ with a RealFeel of 109F and maybe even a higher humidex. It was so hot that the asphalts on the streets melted, revealing how THINLY spread they were on CONCRETE! This was the worst area I saw. (Above: Corner Burgos and Sto. Nino Sts.)

We eat this for breakfast or snacks. Some people prefer to combine the champorado (chocolate porridge) with some other salty accompaniment.

I showed this photo to a French Canadian friend, and for all their exotic and yucky Frenchy delicacies (frogs' legs, snails, etc), she went yech!! with this one. She said, she can eat the chocolate porridge but with more cream and butter, and she can probably eat the dried fish, but the combination of the sweet porridge and the salty dried fish was totally alien and disgusting to her. Hahaha, ok. What do you think?

As you can see, vehicles seem to be almost bumping into one another. There is no traffic lights, most of the time the police are just standing around, even when the traffic becomes confusing. Imagine this full of vehicles which it often is during workdays. But to my knowledge, there has been no accidents here. Drivers drive by feel.

The McDonald's of Tacloban overlooks the bay area (glass windows behind the building). On clear days, you can even see the San Juanico Bridge, but you've to strain real hard. In the 80s, McDo (as we call them here) served only the regular American menu of burgers, attracting only the upper middle class. But they found out that they were losing a lot of customers to Jollibee (local fastfood rival) which served rice, spaghetti, and fried chicken. They soon changed their menu to adapt to the Filipino taste.

Spanish time mansion, old hardwood, windows are made with capiz shells, and I'm sure, a house with lots of history. In Thailand, houses like these are restored and shown to tourists, for a fee. Here, they're either restored into hotels or business centers, or torn down and the hardwood sold to be made into expensive furniture since cutting down old trees are prohibited.

Tahong is a type of mussels that we either make into a soup or we bake, freshly harvested. It spoils easily, so it has to be cooked immediately. Being a coastal island (naturally), we all like our seafoods freshly caught and not frozen or packaged. But sometimes, investors never learn.

If you want to know how it tastes, all I can say is it smells of rancid oil. I never got to the taste part.

A newly-opened Eat All You Can restaurant of Lutong Bahay (home-cooked meals). The one time I went there to eat they were serving Waray cooking which I really enjoyed. Excellent cooking! The next time we went for lunch, they weren't serving eat-all-you-can anymore. Sigh.. I haven't tasted their other foods which aren't lutong bahay, and don't really want to try. This guy climbs all the coconut trees (no harness) to collect the juice from the premature fruit stalk which he then makes into a tuba (local coconut wine).

(Word mananaggot comes from the rootword 'sanggot', a curved knife used to etch a young fruit stalk. Manananggot is the tuba gatherer and maker and sanggot is the tool of the trade.)

Added game is the skimboarding in Tanauan which is said to be the place where skimboarding started, although other towns might challenge that claim. Overall.. I was following these men (penitents, notice their blue costume slung around their shoulders) unceremoniously carrying the Jesus (Santo Intierro) that devotees reverently kissed and prayed to at the Cathedral during the vigil. They were returning the borrowed statue to the family that owned it. After all the pomp and ceremony, this was a good reminder that yesterday's reenactment was all just theater, and this was just one of the props.

Old houses here are still mostly owned by their original family owners. Most of them are run-down. Nobody seems interested in renovating them, or preserving them. I can only think of two that have been preserved, one to a hotel, and another to a museum/office. The others are falling apart, like the picture above.

I always order this monggo con hielo.. it's very, very delicious with the recipe remaining the same since the restaurant opened in the 1950s. Felisa's Cafe is more known for their halo-halo, but I still prefer the monggo.

This is one of the oldest restaurants in Tacloban. When here, try to order the monggo con hielo with extra serving of (sweetened) monggo, or the halo halo. Also, buy your binagol pasalubong here, they sell the special kind.

..on streets. This was just outside the mausoleum gate (previous post). You see this often here, people use the street to dry their newly harvested palay (unmilled rice), leaving the other lane empty for passing cars. This practice is tolerated in small towns.

Where the bodies of Imelda Marcos' parents are buried, and her stillborn child, surrounded by cherubim statues. This used to be a well-maintained garden/park, but was ransacked by heavily armed men during the Edsa Revolution for buried Yamashita treasures, and was never the same again. I grew up spending summers and weekends running around the area, climbing the fence, picking the kalachuchi flowers, exploring the underground 'tunnel', or just sitting on the fence with cousins.

And the only Fish & Chips served in Tacloban. I always opt for the nouc cham sauce to the tartare sauce.
